Description
Description
The Harshacarita of Banabhatta is a historical prose romance in Sanskrit,
describing the events of king Harsa's (7th century A.D.) accession to the
throne, his conquests and his relations with the contemporary monarchs. The
work is valuable both from the literary and historical point of view.
The present book comprises the complete Sanskrit text and elaborate notes
in English. The notes explain the text literally and exegetically and thus,
in fact, are better substitutes for translation. The introduction, prefixed
to the text, deals, among other topics, with the personal history of Bana,
his date and his works, the biography of Harsa, the political conditions
and the religious beliefs prevailing in that age. The appendices contain
the abstract of the Harshacarita and the index.
